What does the electric revolution mean for private hire and taxi companies?

Climate change is on the political, economic and social agenda right now - are you thinking about electric vehicles?

Climate change is on the political, economic and social agenda right now with international market trends suggesting that EV sales will overtake petrol and diesel sales by the late 2030s.

Here in the UK, the Government has signed legislation to bring all UK greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050[2]. Electric vehicles are going to be a big part of the future so now is the time for private hire and taxi companies to think about introducing electric vehicles to their fleets if they have not already done so.

If you’re thinking about introducing electric vehicles to your fleet, there is a lot to consider. It’s not just about the cost, how will electric vehicles fit into your existing set-up? For example, how will you manage issues such as charging points, time taken to charge and distance availability against the rest of your fleet and ensuring efficient fleet dispatch?

How are we preparing for electric vehicles?

Sherlock Taxi's latest product update includes electric vehicle support. We have developed our auto-allocator to incorporate key criteria for EVs into the decision-making process of allocation. The allocator can now consider:

  • Electric charging point locations
  • Battery information including vehicle range remaining before charging is required
  • Vehicle status (for example, current charging with X minutes remaining)
Mike Tobin, Sherlock Taxi Business Unit Director.
As governments across the globe are taking climate change more seriously, it is clear that electric vehicles will be a huge part of the future. The taxi companies that continue to thrive will be those that are ready for these changes. Implementing a Sherlock Taxi dispatch system can really help – we are already known for having the most advanced auto-allocation on the market and now we have built on this to develop our first iteration of electric vehicle support,
